Marcy is responsible for finance, information technology, human resources, legal and fundraising. She also oversees financial planning and reporting in accordance with US and Canadian accounting standards and regulations. Marcy partners with the senior leadership team to ensure SFI meets finance-related strategic objectives. She engages in day-to-day operations while monitoring SFI’s annual budget and overall financial position. Prior to joining SFI, Marcy served as the CFO of Ducks Unlimited Canada for 11 years, where she led finance, IT, and an $18 million renovation project of the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre head office. Marcy is a dual US-Canadian citizen and holds a Certified Public Accounting designation in both countries. She earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Manitoba. Outside work Marcy likes to venture out on road trips and be in nature with her three daughters.

Nadine leads the Community pillar at SFI, with a focus on advancing collaboration between the SFI network and local communities. Prior to joining SFI in 2010, she was Director of Forest Policy at the American Forest & Paper Association and Program Manager at the Pinchot Institute for Conservation. Nadine has over 25 years of professional experience on forest policy and holds a Master of Forestry degree from the Yale School of the Environment and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Williams College. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, twin sons, and rescue dog, enjoys hiking and camping, and volunteers with their local Boy Scouts troop.

Josh leads the education team at SFI advancing Project Learning Tree’s environmental education, forest literacy, and career pathways programs while growing the scale, reach, and impact of PLT. He is responsible for establishing and delivering on PLT’s strategic direction as well as for developing, integrating, and implementing US government stakeholder relations. Josh also oversees national program operations and governance, while developing and nurturing relationships at state, national, and global scales. Josh works collaboratively with the SFI Career Pathways team to scale the reach of educational materials to grow the green job sector. He has over 20 years of experience in education including executive-level positions with a national organization confronting systemic barriers to higher education and a leading experience-based outdoor education non-profit. Josh has also worked as a high school teacher and principal. He holds a Master of Arts in educational administration and leadership from the University of California, Berkley and a Bachelor of Arts in history from Princeton University. A 25-year resident of San Francisco, outside of work, Josh enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors with his family camping or playing at the beach.

Lauren heads the SFI Conservation Pillar, providing conservation leadership internally as well as externally to our network of resource professionals, landowners, educators, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, and governments. She develops best management practices for climate-smart forestry and fire resiliency and awareness, leads SFI participation in collaborative efforts to conserve forested landscapes and integrates Indigenous knowledge into SFI conservation programs. Lauren founded the Forest Carbon and Climate Program at Michigan State University, and she has international experience working with Indigenous communities in Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, and the United States. Lauren has served as a convener, moderator, and facilitator in high-level climate events, engaged in numerous climate working groups and has developed climate curriculum, educational materials, and plans. She currently serves as a steering committee member with the Women’s Forest Congress and on the Forest-Climate Working Group. Lauren is passionate about building new relationships at the intersection of sustainability, forests, society, and climate.

Dr. Healy Hamilton assumes her full-time role in April 2023. She will work collaboratively and strategically across SFI’s conservation pillar to support scaling conservation impact. Healy’s scientific work will further the role of sustainable forest management in species recovery, climate-smart forestry, and conservation outcomes. Healy will also serve as SFI’s conservation science liaison with the wider conservation and scientific community. She will support the SFI standards pillar on customer engagement related to conservation science and the SFI education pillar on engaging Project Learning Tree audiences. Healy currently serves as Chief Scientist for NatureServe, and she is an elected member of the Executive Committee for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature U.S. National Committee. Healy’s impressive track record of leading high-profile and impactful research projects includes developing the most comprehensive and detailed map of species extinction risk, in collaboration with the Environmental Systems Research Institute and The Nature Conservancy. Healy holds a PhD from the Department of Integrative Biology and Museum of Paleontology, at the University of California at Berkeley, and an MA in Environmental Studies from Yale University’s School of the Environment. She channels her passion for the outdoors into hiking, cycling, and scuba diving.

Christine leads SFI’s binational communications team, which also includes Project Learning Tree and Project Learning Tree Canada. She oversees strategic communications while also developing and implementing a range of government and public relations activities. Christine is a Registered Professional Forester with a decade of experience in forestry, policy, communications, public affairs, issues management, and more recently Indigenous relations. She is fluent in English and French and holds a Master of Forest Conservation from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto. Christine is also a Forests Ontario board member, and she was recognized as a Top 10 Under 40 by Canadian Forest Industries magazine. Outside work, Christine spends as much time as she can enjoying the forests of northern Ontario.

Paul plays a central role in SFI’s partnerships with Indigenous communities. He is a citizen of the Métis Nation, with roots in the historic Drummond Island Métis community, and has a wealth of experience in supporting Indigenous rights recognition, relationship building and socioeconomic development. Paul’s work also has a specific focus on understanding the unique realities faced by First Nation, Métis and Inuit youth. As both a professional and an elected community official, Paul has worked to build greater understanding and collaboration between Indigenous communities across Canada and the industry actors operating within their territories. Paul holds a Master of Science in Forestry from Lakehead University and a Forest Technician Diploma and Certificate in Aboriginal‑Canadian Relations from Confederation College. Paul is a recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal and the J. Michael Waldram Memorial Fellowship, recognizing his work as an emerging young Indigenous leader in the natural resources field.

Paul leads SFI’s efforts to enhance the sustainability of urban forestry through the SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard. He is an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Board Certified Master Arborist, Municipal Specialist, and is Tree Risk Assessment, Texas Oak Wilt, and Wildfire Risk Reduction Qualified. He is also a Society of American Foresters Certified Forester. Paul has been recognized as a True Professional of Arboriculture by ISA and received the Leah MacSwords Current Achievement Award for Communications from NASF. He is Past President of the ISA Board of Directors and he graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Forestry. He has been a state urban and community forestry program leader, radio talk show host, newspaper columnist, university extension horticulturist, university adjunct instructor, and plant healthcare specialist. Paul believes that #TreesAreKey to healthier, happier, safer communities.

Gregor oversees the technical requirements of the SFI standards. He helps SFI‑certified organizations implement the standards and supports the work of accredited certification bodies with their SFI standards audits. Prior to joining SFI in 2013, Gregor was a certification auditor for 13 years working with the main North American certification standards. Gregor has over 30 years of professional experience with forestry operations, forest certification and standards development. He holds a Bachelor of Science in forestry from the University of British Columbia, is a Registered Professional Forester in the province of British Columbia and is a Society of American Foresters, Certified Forester. Gregor and his family live in Victoria, B.C. He spends as much time as possible in B.C.’s beautiful forests indulging in his love of flyfishing.

Meg is working with a network of urban and community forestry leaders to establish the new SFI Urban and Community Forest Improvement Program. Part of her work involves promoting certification to the SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard with municipalities, Indigenous communities, underserved communities, health care institutions, school campuses, and corporations. Meg also supports the SFI Career Pathways Program in Canada to increase green job opportunities for all in the urban forestry and forestry sectors. Meg holds a joint honours Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from McGill University as well as a certificate in horticulture and green space management from Laval University. She is an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Board Certified Master Arborist, has completed the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification, and has been volunteering for over a decade for the ISA and its local chapter in Quebec. Meg served on the standards committee for the complete revision of Quebec’s standards in arboriculture and horticulture BNQ 0605.

He also regularly interfaces with customers, SFI‑certified organizations, and other external stakeholders. Nick brings a wealth of experience in sustainability related work—especially in relation to demonstrating a balanced social, economic, and environmental approach to natural resource management. Outside work, Nick is an avid outdoorsman who spends his time exploring the diverse landscapes and ecosystems of remote southeastern Oregon, the region he calls home.

Michael works to expand SFI’s urban and community forestry capacity with a focus on communities and organizations in the US. He also supports SFI’s outreach efforts to grow the reach of the SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard, Career Pathways, and the USFS IRA supported SFI Urban Forest Improvement Program in the US. Michael is a dynamic leader in urban and community forestry with experience working at the state and local government levels. His skillset also includes extensive urban forestry and arboriculture work. Michael attended the Municipal Forestry Institute (MFI) in 2020 and is now an MFI facilitator providing training to new participants. He is an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist, ISA Municipal Specialist, and holds an ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification. In addition, Michael is a New Jersey Licensed Tree Expert, Rhode Island Arborist and Maryland Tree Expert. He serves as a Trustee for the New Jersey ISA Chapter Board, is a Board member of the Urban and Community Forestry Society (UCFS) and sits on the New Jersey Community Forestry Council. Other groups he is active in through the UCFS include the Arborist Exchange and Mentoring program and the LGBTQ+ Professional Group. Outside work, Michael enjoys spending his time hiking and backpacking, experiencing all that nature has to offer.

Zac helps SFI-certified organizations develop marketing content to demonstrate the value of SFI to producers and consumers. He also supports SFI Implementation Committees in Canada where he works to create stronger connections between these committees and SFI-certified organizations through education, forest literacy, and career pathways programming. Zac also brings his skills to developing and delivering forest literacy training resources and tools including webinars, online learning, and educational content. His other responsibilities include researching ESG frameworks and identifying intersections with the SFI standards. In 2019, Zac completed Project Learning Tree Canada’s cross‑country Green Ride for Green Jobs on a wooden bike. He lives in Ottawa where he can usually be found cycling, hiking, or skiing.

As part of SFI’s urban and community forestry team, Alix works to increase the resiliency and sustainability of communities, both large and small. She is passionate about urban forestry and creating sustainable standards for the forest sector. Before joining SFI, she worked as a tree specialist at a nursery, a landscape technician for the City of Edmonton, and was part of the environmental team at the District of North Vancouver. Alix holds a Bachelor of Urban Forestry from the University of British Columbia and is pursuing an Environmental Management Certificate from the University of Calgary. She loves spending time outside, often with her cat Earl, who behaves more like a dog than a cat.

Dr. Darren Sleep is responsible for the incorporation of up-to-date and scientifically rigorous technical content across all SFI’s pillars, ensuring that SFI’s work is grounded in thoughtful, science-based knowledge and communications, and that SFI standards and education programs reflect the latest in scientific understanding. He manages the conservation pillar’s scientific investigations and collaborations and provides leadership on current conservation issues of relevance to forest and supply chain sustainability in support of SFI’s mission, serving on several regional, national, and international scientific advisory boards, including the Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Ontario (COSSARO), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) Boreal Forest Team of Experts. Darren brings expertise on wildlife management, species at risk, and forest science-policy integration to SFI, along with a passion for conservation, and communicating about science with the public. Darren’s recent publications include contributions to the journals Forest Science, Avian Conservation and Ecology, and Scientific Reports. Darren has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of New Brunswick, a Master’s degree from the University of Regina, and a PhD from the University of Guelph. Darren’s free time is spent in various outdoor pursuits, including downhill skiing, wilderness backpacking, canoeing, and kayaking.

Greg plays a central role in SFI’s conservation program by supporting the continual improvement of conservation practices and outcomes. He provides sophisticated technical and scientific expertise, specifically relating to forest ecology, forest management, climate change mitigation and adaptation, fire resilience, and biodiversity. Greg also works to foster and grow the reach of the SFI Conservation Impact Project and the SFI Conservation Impact Sounding Board. His strong background in conservation includes a proven track record of implementing climate-informed forestry practices. Greg has developed and implemented science-based management practices focused on using climate-informed techniques to support resilient, biodiverse forests. He holds a Master of Environmental Management and a Master of Forestry from Duke University. Outside work, Greg enjoys wood turning on a lathe and spending time exploring the Appalachian forests.

Rachel supports the SFI Conservation Program by aiding in conservation grants program tracking and contributing to conservation communications, research, and collaborative projects. She joined SFI in 2014, originally supporting the Standards team and the Office of Label Use and Licensing. Before joining SFI, Rachel worked for the National Capital Commission on environmental assessments and asset management. She gained experience through multiple internships in the natural resource field that focused on endangered species habitat, landscape ecology, and wetland mitigation. Rachel received her Bachelor of Science in wildlife science from Virginia Tech, with minors in biology and natural resource recreation. She earned a Master of Science in biology from the University of Western Ontario specializing in bat ecology.

Carley uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool to explore and conduct research, develop the groundwork for partnerships, and creatively communicate key results to diverse audiences. Her work supports generating, measuring, and communicating conservation outcomes that demonstrate the contribution of SFI‑certified forests and forests affected by the SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard, to overall ecosystem health and sustainability. Carley also updates and maintains SFI’s spatial database and interactive maps, provides expedited analyses for queries related to SFI‑certified forests or research initiatives, and collaborates with staff across the organization to produce creative new ways to display data. Growing up in rural Nova Scotia ignited Carley’s interest in the natural world, and she still spends most of her spare time hiking, biking, and exploring in the Acadian Forest. Carley earned a Bachelor of Science in environmental science and a Certificate in Geographic Information Science from Dalhousie University in 2020.

Stephanie collects and organizes spatial data for analysis, updates existing maps to better communicate the value of SFI-certified forest management and is developing a research database. She also tracks and documents forest management research projects supported by SFI‑certified organizations. The SFI Forest Management Standard has a research requirement for SFI‑certified organizations. Stephanie earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of Windsor, a Master of Forest Conservation from the University of Toronto, and a graduate certificate in GIS from Fleming College. Prior to joining SFI, she applied her research and data analysis skills at the Ojibway Nature Centre in Windsor. Stephanie enjoys spending time outdoors walking and running and improving her species ID skills, especially when it comes to birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Prior to joining SFI, Simrin worked for a pharmaceutical research and development firm where she helped minimize the company’s environmental footprint while enhancing employee health and safety. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, twin sons, and rescue dog, enjoys hiking and camping, and volunteers with their local Boy Scouts troop.

Paul plays a central role in SFI’s partnerships with Indigenous communities. He is a citizen of the Métis Nation, with roots in the historic Drummond Island Métis community, and has a wealth of experience in supporting Indigenous rights recognition, relationship building and socioeconomic development. Paul’s work also has a specific focus on understanding the unique realities faced by First Nation, Métis and Inuit youth. As both a professional and an elected community official, Paul has worked to build greater understanding and collaboration between Indigenous communities across Canada and the industry actors operating within their territories. Paul holds a Master of Science in Forestry from Lakehead University and a Forest Technician Diploma and Certificate in Aboriginal‑Canadian Relations from Confederation College. Paul is a recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal and the J. Michael Waldram Memorial Fellowship, recognizing his work as an emerging young Indigenous leader in the natural resources field.

Josh leads the education team at SFI advancing Project Learning Tree’s environmental education, forest literacy, and career pathways programs while growing the scale, reach, and impact of PLT. He is responsible for establishing and delivering on PLT’s strategic direction as well as for developing, integrating, and implementing US government stakeholder relations. Josh also oversees national program operations and governance, while developing and nurturing relationships at state, national, and global scales. Josh works collaboratively with the SFI Career Pathways team to scale the reach of educational materials to grow the green job sector. He has over 20 years of experience in education including executive-level positions with a national organization confronting systemic barriers to higher education and a leading experience-based outdoor education non-profit. Josh has also worked as a high school teacher and principal. He holds a Master of Arts in educational administration and leadership from the University of California, Berkley and a Bachelor of Arts in history from Princeton University. A 25-year resident of San Francisco, outside of work, Josh enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors with his family camping or playing at the beach.

Rocco plays an integral role in developing and implementing strategies to advance SFI’s conservation programs and enhance relationships with partners. He administers the SFI Conservation Grant Program, which funds innovative projects that advance understanding of sustainable forestry practices. He leads the SFI University Engagement Program, which includes the annual conference scholarship program, internship opportunities, and SFI’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Working Group. Outside SFI, Rocco serves as Communications Chair for the Society of American Forester’s (SAF) Diversity and Inclusion Working Group. He also serves on the National Capitol SAF Chapter Executive Committee, where he is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership. Before joining SFI in 2013, he conducted fire ecology field studies as a U.S. Forest Service technician, and stream geomorphology and habitat assessments with an environmental consulting firm. He holds a Master of Natural Resource in sustainability from Virginia Tech and a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from California’s Humboldt State University. Rocco’s extensive travel in Honduras and academic casework in India has led him to believe personal empathy and cultural understanding are among sustainability’s strongest tools.

Marianna has over 15 years of finance experience with over eight years working in senior management positions at large non‑profits in the U.S. on strategic plans, budgeting, and establishing best-in-class finance practices. Marianna is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) degree from the University of Ottawa. She enjoys spending time outdoors exploring local parks and hiking trails and going to the beaches in Delaware with her two dogs.

Mila leads the financial operations of Project Learning Tree Canada, including reporting and compliance, in addition to supporting fundraising. Prior to joining SFI, Mila worked as a controller at various not-for-profit organizations for 10 years. She has more than 20 years of progressive experience in financial management and financial reporting in both private and not-for-profit sectors, reporting on various projects funded by all levels of government. Mila is pursuing her Chartered Professional Accountant designation. She holds a Master of Arts in history, ethnography, and education, and has a teaching diploma. She speaks Russian fluently and has some facility in Romanian. In her free time, Mila enjoys kayaking and exploring Ottawa’s urban forest trails.

Rachel oversees SFI’s technology strategy, including helping to guide the organization’s future direction, goals, objectives, and initiatives. In addition to leading all projects pertaining to Salesforce, Rachel is responsible for leading SFI’s data integrity and data processes across all pillars. She has spent her career working with forest-related data, making it accessible and understandable to others. Rachel worked in Germany at Albert-Ludwigs-University where she taught an online statistics course in forest biometrics. Moving back to Canada in 2004, she worked for Abusow International Ltd. collecting and analyzing forest certification data before joining SFI in 2007. She holds a Master of Science from Albert-Ludwigs-University in Sustainable Forestry and Land Use Management and speaks German fluently. She lives in Ottawa with her husband and three children and is passionate about finding fun new ways to make the outdoors accessible for her daughter with mobility challenges.

Julia leads the human resources functions and supports SFI’s four pillars—standards, conservation, education and community—by meeting the talent, culture, and resource needs of the organization and employees. She oversees recruiting, payroll and compensation, benefits, labor compliance, the performance review process, and employee development. Julia has over 12 years of experience in non-profit operations in the environmental sector. Prior to her career in operations and HR, Julia freelanced as a classical musician. She lives in the Washington DC area, where you can often see her traveling by bicycle with her two children.

Manu is the point person for all information technology that includes support, infrastructure management, security, and compliance. He partners with other technology leaders for strategic technology needs across our organization. Manu also provides analysis and strategy on multiple platforms and systems related to SFI’s work. He has two decades of experience implementing IT systems. Manu also draws on a wealth of experience with and an understanding of many different technologies. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Business and Technology from Coventry University in the UK, and multiple IT certifications, including a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer certificate from Georgetown University.

Jane supports SFI’s accounting and operations. Her varied responsibilities include the month-end financial close, budgeting, reporting, and accounts payable. Jane has extensive accounting experience in the non-profit sector. She previously served as Accounting Manager at the Council on Foundations, where she managed the day-to-day functions of the finance department. As a budget analyst at the Ocean Conservancy, Jane facilitated budgeting, reporting, and tracking program grants. She holds a BS in Accounting from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA and is currently pursuing her certification in managerial accounting.

Kirsten supports SFI’s growing team by managing onboarding and offboarding processes, assisting with the hiring of new staff, administering benefits, supporting payroll processes, and answering employee human resources questions. Before joining SFI, Kirsten was an HR Coordinator at Earth Fare, a supermarket chain that improves lives by making healthy food available to everyone. She also taught seventh grade math as an AmeriCorps Urban Education Fellow. Kirsten is pursuing a Master of Science in Human Resources from Western Carolina University and she holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Ohio Wesleyan University.

Alex Mascrier

Alex brings over 20 years of experience as an administrative and support specialist, combining exceptional program management skills with a robust academic background in environmental management. He supports our DC office operations, staff and committee meetings, and various special projects. In his previous role, Alex specialized in environmental health and safety permitting, data analysis using GIS, and developing internal tracking systems. He holds a Master of Science in environmental management from the University of Maryland Global Campus and a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology focused on environmental sustainability from Southern New Hampshire University. Alex speaks French fluently and Spanish conversationally. Outside work, Alex likes to take day trips to hike with his wife and their senior dog.
